Spirogyra Diversified, a for-profit, is developing plans to license and rapidly commercialize NPI’s proprietary technologies for aquaculture, aquaponics, and algalculture ---and NPI would thus receive royalty income to help support its charitable activities. The plan is to integrate subject technologies to create a biosecure method of producing fish, vegetables, omega-3 lipids, nutraceuticals, and multi-nutrient supplements. Filter feeding fish, such as tilapia and paddlefish, will be reared in raceways that produces algal and zooplankton crops, and the fish will harvest these crops to feed themselves. Fish manure, some fish water, and a small quantity of algae will form a “fertigation” mix for use in organic production of produce (veggies). Water is recycled back to the raceway after being filtered by the aquaponics system. The surplus algae is harvested for value-added crops; e.g. lipids, nutraceuticals, and/or multi-nutrient supplements. The system is designed to operate without any outside inputs, and may be environmentally controlled, so that total biosecurity may be achieved as part of our effort to prevent bioterrorism. Subject project is one of several social entrepreneurial projects being developed by NPI.
